Based in Melbourne, Greg Cooper loves to write music that celebrates the small moments, and treasures the gift of life and the beauty of the everyday. Formerly a member of worship band Garage Hymnal, and as a worship leader at churches and events throughout Australia, he is drawn to songs that point to a hope beyond the reality we see.

Following 2018’s Heal, produced by ARIA award winner Shane Nicholson, September 2022 saw the release of a new six track EP, South Of The River. These compositions capture stories of distance, uncertainty, and hope that surrounded us all in recent unsettling times. The EP was recorded with Emmy award winning producer Sean Carey (Daniel Johns, Julia Stone, and former guitarist of Thirsty Merc), navigating border closures and restrictions.

The lead single from this release, The Same God, captures a tone of hope and security in God amidst the total disorientation the world has recently experienced.

In February 2023, Greg released South Of The River – Acoustic, solo interpretations of these 6 songs, recorded in the space of an afternoon, once again with Carey at Sydney’s Church Street Studios.

Greg’s debut solo album – The Four Day Weeks of April – was released in 2008, followed in 2010 by the Held Back the Sun EP. After productive co-writing sessions in Nashville, he released the Again and Again EP in 2013. Further writing sessions in the USA with writers including Marcella Detroit (Shakespeares Sister, Eric Clapton Band) led to The Sculptor EP in 2015. These releases have received radio airplay throughout Australia and Europe. In 2019, Cooper recorded a live piano EP – Red Cedars – capturing tracks from HEAL and songs he has written for churches.

Greg is passionate about God’s people treasuring and being comforted by His word in song. From 2006 to 2015, Greg played in Sydney worship band Garage Hymnal, co-writing numerous tracks across the band’s six albums, and working closely with ARIA-award winning producer David Nicholas (Elton John, Delta Goodrem, The Veronicas). The band toured widely throughout Australia and is honoured to have its songs sung at churches throughout the world.

Greg has also had the privilege of serving in various music ministries over the last 15 years, being a part of staff teams at Christ Church St Ives and Grace City Church in Sydney, and St Jude’s Carlton in Melbourne. He has also served on the staff team for EMU Music, focusing on songwriter development and album production. Greg’s desire to see music ministries equipped and inspired has seen him visit churches throughout Australia, as well as further afield in New Zealand, South Africa, and Singapore. Having previously worked as a lawyer focused on social justice, Greg also enjoys sharing about the ministry of Compassion Australia at Australian churches.

Greg and his wife Sharon love being a part of City on a Hill in Melbourne.

Through it all, Greg seeks to offer hope, comfort, and inspiration in song for the life journey we are all travelling.
